Hair Expo 2019 has wrapped with a bang after the professional hairdressing industry came together for three packed days of innovation, inspiration and discovery in Sydney. Top-tier education, product launches, demonstrations, networking, entertainment and two incredible evening events set the scene for the Festival of Hair, and it didn’t disappoint!
With an entire year’s worth of inspiration condensed in to one long weekend, we could talk for hours about all the incredible things we saw, experienced and learned at Hair Expo 2019, but here’s our top highlights.
Education is such an important part of Hair Expo, with world-renowned educators from Australia and the globe gathering in Sydney to share their sought-after tips, tricks, styles and techniques with visitors.
Hairdressing business expert and Hair Expo headliner, Tabatha Coffey, conducted six exclusive one on one business coaching sessions over the weekend, providing tailored step by step plans for attendees to most effectively and efficiently reach their goals. “[My advice to salon professionals] is most importantly not to give up, to always believe in yourself and your dreams, even if nobody else does, and to always keep moving towards them. There will be obstacles and failures along the way, but they are not reasons to stop pursuing what you want, they are just lessons of growth,” said Tabatha.
Leading balayage educator and amazingly talented and entertaining Hair Expo headliner, Candy Shaw, had huge success with her ‘Painting Balayage 2.0’ hands-on workshops and ‘Balayage Brilliance’ Look ‘n’ Learn. “Wow, Australia has some of the best hairdressers in the world, in my opinion. However, what I’m noticing is that they are very routine orientated in their work, so I’ve enjoyed breaking that barrier with them and helping them understand the benefits of Balayage and how they can take their careers on a different path to have a new level of fun and art with their work,” Candy said. “I’m encouraged by how balayage is going to take a stand in Australia and it’s amazing to see how enthusiastic, inquisitive, friendly and determined the attendees of my workshops have been.”
Globally esteemed hairdresser, Sharon Blain, inspired audiences as she took them on a creative journey with her ‘Masters Edition’ Look ‘n’ Learn session. Sharon continued to fuel the creative passion of visitors during a hands-on workshop tailored to long hair styling. Sharon’s looks were characterised by bold, on-trend styles that exuded technical skill, but were simple enough for salon professionals to be able to re-create back in their salons on their clients.
Hollywood’s queen of hairdressing, celebrity hairstylist Jen Atkin, inspired visitors during her ‘Once in a Lifetime Masterclass’, in partnership with Dyson. Jen took visitors through new hair trends and showcased her favourite tips and tools to use on her A-list clients. The self-made talent and founder of OUAI haircare and digital hair community Mane Addicts, also utilised her time on the mic to share what she has learned through her successful business endeavours, and gave advice on business, social media and more. She was joined on stage by 2018 Hair Expo Awards Australian Hairdresser of the Year, Joey Scandizzo, and session stylist Renya Xydis, who discussed the styles Jen showcased on stage, her favourite products and tools to use, and her top tips for perfect styling. The education theatre was packed with young hairdressers and stylists, highlighting Jen’s continued influence on the growing industry.
Monday saw barbering enthusiasts spoilt for choice for men’s hair education, with five designated Barberland education sessions taking place throughout the day. Some of the biggest names in barbering, including Jules Tognini, Anthony Staltari, Johnny Georgiou and Eoin McCarthy, took to the theatre stage to share their techniques on everything from tapering, fading, cutting, shaping and more.
The expo floor
The bustling expo floor facilitated opportunities for visitors and exhibitors to interact one on one, which remains one of the biggest drawcards for exhibitors and salon managers of attending Hair Expo.
Pete Walstab, Boss Man of Excellent Edges, boasted of the impressive response the brand has had at Hair Expo 2019. “It’s been so busy [for Excellent Edges] this year. Hair Expo is one of the best events where you can get the most amount of hairdressers concentrated in to one place and as many eyes on your product that you could ever get in Australia. We exhibit at Hair Expo every year and will continue to keep coming back. I just want to grow as much as I can with Expo, because of the fact that they keep bringing such quality people in here, so it’s great for my business and it’s great for our industry,” Pete said.
Shopping bags were full with visitors spoilt for choice on the show floor, with 300+ leading brands to sample and shop from – many offering Expo-only promotions. Shoppers could experience products including hair treatments, tools, salon furniture, accessories, colour dyes, hair extensions and everything in between.
Tabatha Coffey also delighted visitors with an official meet and greet near the Main Stage on the final day of Hair Expo, where fans could chat to and take photos with the globally esteemed hairdressing icon.
The expo floor was buzzing with excited hair professionals ready to meet and learn from their idols, with appearances on the Main Stage from US social media creative colourist Guy Tang, renowned hairstylist and Global Creative Director of ANTI Collective Nick Irwin, and famed industry icons Robert Cromeans and Angus Mitchell.
The GlamPalm Absolute Styling team featuring multi-award winning stylists Geoffrey Herberg and Eunha Choi, and industry educator and salon owner Sandy Turner, showcased amazing techniques and tips to visitors seeking to build technical skills. The team’s ‘Enter a New Era of Styling Techniques’ session took place on the Main Stage and provided a fantastic demonstration of the innovative ways in which professionals can utilise their styling tools and accessories to create looks that push the boundaries.
On the Styling Stage sponsored by Hot Tools Professional, internationally renowned stylist Marcel Khoury gave an impressive demonstration on style curling. Transforming the ordinary in to the exceptional, Marcel demonstrated how best to create beautiful voluminous curls and waves that visitors could replicate back in their salons.
Jessie Smooth and Rex Silver’s ‘A great shave is not just a man’s task’ session proved to be a highlight of the Men’s Stage. Supporting the growing trend of female barbers, the duo focused on instilling confidence and teaching female barbers the techniques to give their male clients a great shave that will keep them coming back.

I’m so happy with the results – the styling, the hair – the team just gave it their all,” Mary said. “The inspiration for the show came from a video clip by the artist FKA Twiggs. I loved the cultural diversity in that clip and I really wanted to bring it to life. We’re a diverse team and it really represents us. We’re so thrilled to have been able to present and create magic for everyone to see tonight,” she said.
