‘For The Love Of’ founders Renya Xydis, Natalie Anne and Monique McMahon will be collaborating for the final time this year with an eight hour live event on Sunday 20 October in Sydney’s picturesque Paddington.
The powerhouse trio will share their secrets to success including backstage at international Fashion Weeks, behind the Instagram lens, and on the salon floor. Hosting a networking panel, they will discuss the topics that are usually taken off the table at industry networking events, opening the floor for salon owners, managers and aspiring hair superstars to ask their burning questions. The panel will be followed by live demonstrations of each of their signature crafts – Renya’s incredible editorial styles, Monique’s colour mastery and Natalie Anne’s Big Hair and social talents.
We caught up with Monique McMahon, Director of QUE and co-founder of For The Love Of, to get the inside scoop on the live event and what’s trending in salons.
Hair Expo: How was the idea of For The Love Of born, and what did you most want to achieve from creating this brand?
MM: The idea came after Renya was on the panel at a recent Q ACADEMY workshop. We loved working together and educating. I said to Ren, “if I only knew then, what I know”. This was the catalyst for why we moved forward with For The Love Of – to share all the ups and downs of being a business owner in this industry, and so we could share all our learnings, and discuss how to stay relevant and inspired – and also INSPIRING your team to greatness.
You’ve had several amazing events this year as part of the For The Love Of brand – what makes your final event this year, For The Love Of: LIVE, a stand out and must-attend?
This is our last event for 2019 and will have us all presenting live techniques, how-to tutorials from the salon floor and back stage at international Fashion Weeks. Natalie Anne gets behind the lens with Instagram. Never before have you had these three diverse elements come together, live on stage.
What’s the primary education offering you are bringing to For The Love Of: LIVE?
It’s education on every level from the salon owner, manager through to the editorial stylist, apprentices, Instagram queens and those on the salon floor. We’re demonstrating our signature colouring techniques, formulas, toners and pricing. Everything from the language and culture we choose to instill into our businesses in order to build them as brands. Insta-worthy hair, editorial shoots, must have tools from our kits and Fashion Week insights – we are across it all!
How can salon owners particularly benefit from the key learnings that will be demonstrated at the event?
Yes, big time learnings for the salon owner! We’re sharing our front of house secrets with a template on the best system for FOH, also what the targets should be for this position and how to maximize productivity from this role. My recommendation is that guests consider what they’d like to gain from spending the day with us, and share their expectations from the outset. We’re all here to learn, and we have different things to gain from the experience.
Why do you believe education is a driving factor for success?
It’s the only way to level up!
As a hugely successful salon owner and colour master, what’s your greatest piece of advice for aspiring colour professionals?
Educate yourself. Surround yourself with people who are driven, creative and are genuinely aspiring to be the best!
What are some of the products you can’t live without in your kit?
I always need my YS Parks tail comb, my Lorna Evans big tail comb, and Christophe Robin’s shade variation mask in baby blonde, plus his cleansing mask with lemon and Wella plex.
What are your predictions for upcoming hair trends?
Less is more for the Australian girls right now. This seasons colours all have a nude finish with a super glossy over tone. Our top requests?
Glossy golden blondes with a scandi hairline:
Leaving the hair very shiny and iridescent, golden blondes suit almost any skin tone! Adding in a “scandi hairline” (bleaching or shifting the baby hairs on the hairline post colour service 1-2 shades) has become the top trend in our salon! These are popular on all levels of colour, a detailed hairline help you stand out from the crowd.
Seamless brunettes with tonal difference:
With the move to more natural organic tones on high demand, it’s all about “50 shades of nude colour”! Think creamy walnuts, golden biscuit and mousy brown hues.
