Globally acclaimed hair stylist, Kevin Murphy, returned to Melbourne Fashion Week‘s runways as Hair Director for the 16th year. Australia’s most highly-anticipated fashion showcase took place from 28 August – 5 September 2019, highlighting hair trends for Spring/Summer 2019. Working with some of the most respected designers in the industry, including J’Aton Couture, Martin Grant, Nevenka, Carla Zampatti, Alice McCall, Ginger & Smart, Camilla and Marc and Manning Cartel, Kevin Murphy and his team brought glamour, incredible creativity and zest to the runway. Here’s our favourite looks from Kevin Murphy this M/FW:
Town Hall Opening Runway
Friday 30 August – Featuring Martin Grant, J’Aton Couture, Thurley and Nevenka, Kevin Murphy created a hyper shine to a refined style, incorporating a stitched bun at the nape of the neck to pay homage to the designers and their craft.
“We wanted to tap into the craftsmanship of these designers and reflect the incredible tailoring in their creations through the hair so we created a look that embodies high shine and style, keeping it chic and elegant,” Kevin said.
Tuesday 3 September – Featuring Acler, Alice McCall, Akira, ANNA QUAN, By HIM and Ginger & Smart, Kevin Murphy created a subtle pop of glamour with a sleek low pony with an intricate center braid caught at the bottom by a burst of gold embellishment.
“I wanted to create a small silhouette and simple style to emphasize the exaggerated shapes from the designers. Adding subtle detail adds interest and draws the eye to the unexpected which is something I love,” Kevin said.
Feminine power pony
Wednesday 4 September – Featuring ATOIR, C/MEO COLLECTIVE, ELLIATT, Keepsake the Label and We are Kindred, Kevin Murphy took inspiration from the ‘power ponytail’ from the late 90’s.
“Hair has a luxe finish with a glass like shine to show purpose, then we added the contrast of bows and well-placed accessories to highlight the power in femininity,” Kevin said.
The tailored pleat
Thursday 5 September – Featuring Carla Zampatti, Jason Gretch, Calibre, Dom Bagnato, Nicola Finetti, Joe Black, LEO & LIN and the Still Still Studio, Kevin Murphy applied classic folding and pleating techniques to hair to showcase the craft of tailoring and iconic classic shapes.
“I wanted the look for tonight to reference the androgyny of the 80’s but in a really modern, sleek way. I kept the over use of high shine product obvious so the lines and silhouette were smooth, defined and polished,” Kevin said.
Runway 8 – Closing runway
Thursday 5 September – Featuring Arnsdorf, Camilla and Marc, Scanlan and Theodore, Viktoria & Woods and Manning Cartel, Kevin Murphy worked on a 70’s silhouette with a touch of the 80’s fusing into a current day style, creating a timeless look bringing modern designs to life.
“Tonight’s look is a combination of all the nuances in hair from the eras I love. You have the soft feminine waves from the 70’s at the back with the defined sleek straight strength of the 80’s in the front and a tiny hint of the 90’s with the overuse of product for the finish; it’s the perfect mash up,” Kevin said.
