The French have a knack for precision and detail, whether it’s in design, food, fashion or wine. It’s this concept that springs to mind when I step inside celebrity colourist Christophe Robin’s Parisian salon on Rue Bachaumont, in the city’s chic second arrondissement. Eclectic art, kitschy knick-knacks and bold prints combine to create a space that feels unique and elegant.
Botticelli’s Birth of Venus is the inspiration for the seashell centrepiece of a dedicated boutique, located at the entrance of the salon. The boutique is a pamper pit-stop for passerby Parisians, featuring Christophe’s eponymous retail line dedicated to coloured and sensitised hair. In a confident nod to the efficacy of his products, shoppers can experience a complimentary hair wash at the seashell basin on a walk-in basis, and can then use his styling products to style their own hair. Voila.
Those who have booked an appointment are chaperoned through to the salon, which opened in 2016. (Prior to this, Christophe operated for several years out of the luxurious hotel Le Meurice.) Christophe has enlisted a comprehensive team of top colourists and stylists; as well as a manicurist and makeup artist for a full-service treatment offering.
Around the salon’s several spaces, from the waiting area to the washbasins, the decor is mismatched (in a good way) with Buddha statues sitting alongside 1930s flapper girls and ornate antiques. Bold, animal-print carpet is offset by pastel hues and metallic finishings. There’s an impressive collection of poodle ornaments (we are in Paris, after all), colourful retro-style furniture, bountiful flower arrangements and potted plants. It’s Parisian elegance with a warm and welcoming twist.
Christophe’s ethos that natural beauty can be enhanced with colour has seen him find favour with many big names including Kylie Minogue, Tilda Swinton and Catherine Deneuve. The celebrity appeal is tangible during my casual visit to the salon, where a member of the Rolling Stones was receiving a private treatment in one of the adjacent rooms.
Christophe’s celeb success is rooted in the supermodel era of the 1990s when he created the colour looks for several prominent names including Claudia Schiffer and Elle Macpherson. He went on to open his first two-chair salon in 1995, the first to be solely dedicated to colour services; and launched his haircare line in 1999, which has made waves among consumers for its natural properties with effective results.
Salon Christophe Robin is located at 16 Rue Bachaumont, 75002 Paris.
