HJ’s 2017 British Hairdresser of the Year
Brooks & Brooks, London, UK
Sally Brooks is the co-founder of Brooks & Brooks salon in London alongside partner Jamie. She has previously won HJ’s London Hairdresser of the Year award and, in 2017, Sally made her debut as a nominee for British Hairdresser of the Year – the first woman to receive a nomination in more than 10 years.
Sally describes how her collection was built around the models she selected prior to any creative consultation. Her models acted as her inspiration.
My collection is a compilation of single images rather than one whole collection. I am always inspired by people around me and this shoot is no different – I choose my models first before the concept, as I find a girl’s face and attitude inspiring. I designed the whole collection around three girls I met who inspired me. It was a two-day shoot to remember and a wish that I could do this every day with my favourite team – my passion of creating not only hair, but a total look.
“This shoot really started taking shape after meeting one young model, I loved her innocence and knew straight away I wanted to use her (LHS, image 1). Then I met Kitty – super-fun with an amazing attitude and I shot her to suit her own, unique style (image 2). I also met an amazing girl that had just shaved her own hair and designed a picture around her. Her whole vibe was that she didn’t want to look like other girls but wanted to be individual. We found her a partner on Instagram with a similar attitude (image 3). The rest of the collection was designed around these three girls.
“The team is really important – it’s about allowing each person to bring their talent to a picture. From Lan’s incredible ability to use her make-up as art to make the girl look beautiful, to the stylist Milly, who captured my vision. Photographer Jenny has been a friend for a long time – we worked together on the first test shoot we both did when we were starting out. I wanted to work with someone who I trusted to bring the vision in my head to life. Each picture was lit differently, styled differently and with a different vibe – it’s a collaboration of amazing people that have the same vision; simplicity, emotion and fun.”
