Q+A with Rixon Hair
When did you decide on the concept for the new salon design and where did the inspiration come from?
The concept took about a year from conception and was actually for our old space in which we were situated in for 17 years. Dramatic circumstances changed our direction and we are now situated on the whole first floor of a heritage building on the beautiful Edward Street. We were inspired by the bones and charming character of the building and were able to bring our design brief to the new space, which was one of a softened industrial feel. We were on a quest for individual expression that would embody a new approach to pared-back luxury.
What was important to you when deciding on an aesthetic for the space?
We wanted to create an inclusive space that would feel like a large liveable loft that didn’t resemble the look of a traditional sparkly salon. It needed to be a flexible creative working space that could be converted into a large educational venue to be utilised for external training and hosting events.
Were there any challenges that you came across during the refurbishment?
Plenty of challenges including:
- Needed to double our budget!
- Crazy time frame (needing to be in the week before Christmas).
- Major plumbing works in a heritage building.
- Having to crane building materials into a tricky upstairs space.
Are there any special touches you include in your salon service that your clients love?
Our clients have become addicted to our handmade melting moments made lovingly for 18 years straight by Sharon’s mum! (The only challenge is when she has a holiday!)
How has winning a Hair Expo Award impacted your business so far?
Winning the award has certainly created a buzz in the salon and it’s a great reward for our whole team as they were so patient and resilient through an amazingly crazy time! The media attention has been a great boost for the team and clients.
