Q+A with Nathan
Can you tell us a little bit about how you created the looks for your collection?
The looks I created are a mix of a precision haircut and short textured crop. Others are built completely from hair pieces. One in particular was created by layering sand and different coloured glitter on each hairpiece and hairspray and gel were used to mould hair into different shapes. It took about two weeks to add all the sand and glitter into the hair alone.
Where did your inspiration for the collection come from?
My collection Furiosa has a few different inspirations, the first being the elements; earth, wind, fire, water. Every look draws its strength from one of those elements. The other inspiration came from watching the movie ‘Mad Max Fury Road’. Each of the girls are a direct reference to the band of captive females in the movie with the main character Furiosa also featuring as well.
How did you decide on your creative team (MUA, Photographer, stylist, etc) and how did you ensure that your vision came to life?
The team I used has been one that I’ve worked with over a number of years now. I think it’s very important to have people around that you trust and know well so that the creativeness just flows on the day. Once I have the idea or concept, it’s then bounced around the team. The brief is sent out to them and then developed further right up to the day.
What does winning a Hair Expo Award mean to you?
Winning the New South Wales award means so much to me on different levels. But the main thing is, appreciating the fact that people out there understand your work and like your work. It’s a great honour for me to win, also because a lot of the finalist I admire and look up too.
What’s your best advice for anyone thinking about entering in 2019?
Anyone that is thinking about entering, just do it. Don’t think about it. It’s a great way to document your work and be creative with no limitations or restrictions. You can also see how you have developed as a hairdresser as well. It will be the best thing you do in your career. It will push you out of your comfort zone & make you grow!
