In an unprecedented win, two Kiwi hairdressers took out both platinum awards in Creative Vision and Colour Vision at the 2017 international Wella TrendVision competition, held in London last month.
Kylie Hayes from Moha Hairdressing in Dunedin won the Creative Vision Platinum Award, with Mana Dave from Blaze Salon in Auckland taking out the Colour Vision Platinum Award. Not only was it the first time that the same country had been awarded Platinum awards in both categories, but it was also the first time that either Australia or New Zealand had won a Platinum spot at the Wella TrendVision competition – a huge achievement.
The pair competed against 83 finalists from around the world in front of a panel of judges including icons like UK stylist Eugene Souleiman, former Sassoon Colour Director Annie Humphreys, US colourist Larisa Love, and German colourist Andreas Kurkowitz.
We chatted with Kylie about how she celebrated her wonderful achievement, her 2018 trend predictions, and her love for Vikings.
Tell us how it felt to win the Creative Vision Platinum award at the Wella TrendVision comp?
It’s an exciting privilege, to be recognised for your skill and your dedication to your craft. To have EUGENE SOULEIMAN (a hairstyling genius) announce your name as the platinum award winner on the international stage is an incredible feeling!
What inspired your winning look?
My entry this year is among some of my most favourite work to-date. I pride myself on being a visionary; creating unseen, innovative looks. My model allowed me to have my two favourite haircuts collide – the bowl cut and the mullet fused to create the bùllet (pronounced boo-lay).
How did you celebrate the win?
Wella had organised for the Wella TrendVision winners to be recognised on stage at the Alternative Hair Show [in London]. Our names were announced and, one by one, we walked onto the stage of the Royal Albert Hall to the sound of 2000 applauding us. Truly surreal!
OMG our incredible NZ finalists @manadave and @kyliehayeshairartist took out PLATINUM at INTERNATIONAL TrendVision 2017 for #ColorVision & #CreativeVision! Congratulations for your amazing work and deserved wins 👏🏼 So proud of the NZ and AU team, you are all super talented and we can't wait to see what's next ❤️🇳🇿🇦🇺 #wellalife #wellafamily #trendvision17 #london
