Hair Expo hits the MCEC on 9 June for three days of discovery and inspiration in all things hair. Alongside the non-stop education and new innovations to be discovered on the expo floor, visitors can also look forward to the 2018 GenNext Gala, this year sponsored by Matrix, on Sunday 10 June.
This year co-hosted by celeb columnist Richard Reid and industry heavyweight Jules Tognini from lil’ off the top, GenNext is a highlight of Hair Expo, each year featuring stage productions and performances that stretch the boundaries of creativity in hair. Designed to provide a platform for the next generation of up and coming talent in the industry, this year’s gala will see eight teams take to the stage, as well as a main act from the Matrix Playground team – Uros Mikic, Stevie English, Kobi Bokshish, Adam Ciaccia, Mat Johnson, and Paul Ricupito.
The eight teams that will present at the GenNext Gala 2018 include:
- Ibiza Hair
- The M Collective
- The Masters Institute of Creative Education Program Korean Artists
- Project NZ
- Revolution Hairdressing
- Fellowship of British Hairdressing F.A.M.E. Team 2018 in Collaboration with BaByliss PRO
- Box Hill TAFE
- Matrix Hot Team
In his first time presenting at the GenNext Gala as part of the Matrix Playground act, Adam Ciaccia hopes to motivate hairdressers in the same way that he has been in years past.
“I haven’t missed a Hair Expo in 17 years. I’m hoping that I can inspire other people the way that I was inspired. It always used to be something we’d get excited about in our salon… you get inspired by the youth because they’re raw and it’s not refined yet, and there’s something really beautiful about that. And then you get to see people who are more established where you can take that inspiration back to the salon”, says Adam.
“GenNext is something I love as I believe that the opportunity to be a part of GenNext in previous years contributed to growing Stevie English Hair’s reputation,” said another Matrix Playground team member, Stevie English. “This will be the fourth GenNext that I have worked on and I’m super excited for you to see our design team’s work… we have such talent and I love playing my role in that. Matrix will bring a show and do it differently to what we have delivered over the last few years.”
The eight GenNext teams are preparing for the gala, with Project NZ teasing a black magic-inspired theme for its show, OBEAH. Team member Sara Allsop says that the audience will be “entranced by the dark arts of voodoo and the original voodoo queen herself, Marie Laveau.”
Michael Piastrino of the Ibiza Hair team says that visitors should “brace yourself for a show that will make your chair shake”, while The Masters Institute has hinted that the Korean team “have developed a truly creative collaboration of all things, hair, fashion and makeup!”
The GenNext Gala takes place from 7:30pm on Sunday 10 June at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC). Tickets are priced at $159 and include a drink on arrival. Visit www.hairexpoaustralia.com for more information and to purchase.
