Nick Irwin is a prolific session stylist based in the UK whose career has included stints at TONI&GUY under the mentorship of Anthony Mascolo and Global Creative Director at TIGI. Nick now collaborates with some of the world’s most influential fashion photographers and publications to produce inspiring and cutting-edge session work.
At Hair Expo 2018, Nick will be making a rare educational appearance in a Look ‘n’ Learn session, where he’ll be looking at how elements of popular culture have informed his work over the past 30 years. We had a quick chat with Nick about what he’s looking forward to in June, as well as his thoughts on major changes in the industry.
Looking forward to having you back in Australia, Nick! What is it that you want hairdressers to know about what you’ll be bringing to Hair Expo in Melbourne?
Well, a few things really. I’m heading up the UK FAME Team again and they will be showcasing their brand new collection THE DEVIANTS, which is really exciting! I’m also thrilled to be doing a Look N Learn seminar, where I will be giving an insight into my career which spans over 30 years and will link it to music and fashion.
What would you say has been your biggest career highlight to-date?
This is always a tough question as there have been so many pivotal moments, but I would have to say meeting and working with one of my idols who is now my dear friend, Rankin. He is such an iconic photographer and we have created some incredible images together. I work with him on a weekly basis and we shoot everything from celebrities to high fashion campaigns.
What do you see as the major differences in the industry from when you began your career, in the mid-80s, to today?
The biggest difference is the development and technology of products available. In the ’80s we had hairspray, mousse, gel, wax, and setting lotion. Today, we are so lucky to have what’s on offer. In saying that, I still stick to around five basic styling products. The ’80s is having a huge influence on fashion and hair at the moment, so it’s great to see references cropping up in today’s looks……
You brought the UK FAME Team to Hair Expo last year – what do you think young, gifted stylists can stand to gain from an experience like Hair Expo?
It’s a trip of a lifetime for them and to be invited by you guys to come and showcase their talent is incredible. It’s my second year as the mentor and the 2018 UK FT is really on it. Taking part in such a wonderful event gives them the confidence and tools to succeed on a global platform. Any young stylist that has the opportunity to be part of this event should do so with open arms.
If you could have five people (dead or alive) at a dinner party, who would it be and why?
I would have Prince, Grayson Perry (the artist), John Galliano, Barrack Obama and my daughter. They are all major influences in my life and I would invite my daughter so she could meet these wonderful game-changers from all walks of life.
Nick Irwin’s Look ‘n’ Learn, Inception, will run at Hair Expo on Monday 11 June. For more information and to book, head here: www.hairexpoaustralia.com
