Palmer&Company International is a group of talented like-minded hair educators who have gained experience working with the best in the biz worldwide. Forming an education concept they call the MethoD, the group provide a personalised journey that harnesses students’ strengths and identifies their weaknesses, in order to guide them in the right direction to reach their true potential. We caught up with Dove Palmer ahead of Palmer&Company International’s appearance at Hair Expo 2019, to find out more about the group’s roots in the industry, advice they have for newbie hairdressers and what they’re most looking forward to in June.
What prompted you to enter the hair industry, where did you start, and what were your early years like?
The hair Industry is a world of changes, you work in a socially creative environment that keeps changing, giving you new and exciting ideas all the time. This is why we entered the industry, it’s the best in the world. The team’s journey has been very different, some of them starting later in life, or trained from a young man. Each of our backgrounds come from precision cutting, teaching and training with the leading educators in the world. To start with any journey is difficult, in the early years of developing our MethoD we had to train hard, staying late to practice, always model hunting, breaking down and developing concepts, then seeing how the students developed. It was very difficult of work life and social life. But it set us in good stead to get to Expo this year.
Where do you source your inspiration from?
It is important not to focus on fashion but on making a beautiful, suitable shape. If a haircut is dated but looks amazing, this is more important than the most creative look, Suitability. So we take our inspiration for hair from the materials we have to work with, head shape, bone structure, hair length and density. Mixing these with the concept of beauty and individuality we find inspiration in each person.
Who do you admire in the industry?
Working with an amazing network of friends you find yourself admiring many people, but just to mention a few who have become close:
Benny Tognini and Emiliano Vitale have become amazing friends, their vision to create Ssh! just changed the game for hairdressing events, they also have very kind hearts that are open developing the industry.
The guys from X-presion Creativos have always pushed hair in a relaxed open environment while having fun – if you have not seen them you must.
A good friend of mine Alexey Trishin, the mind behind the Simushka Academy, Moscow who organises the leading Barbering Show & Exhibition in Russia with the the amazing Barber King Competition. He works had to give to the Education of Russian hairdressers and he is a really nice man.
Most important are my team: Greta Maroino and Tamas Megyeri. They are two people who love hair and learning, always pushing to be better. I love them and you will get to see them at Expo this year on the Sunday seminar and main stage.
This is only a few, we have been lucky with our friends and know we will all grow together.
How has your style and execution changed since moving from Mazella & Palmer to Palmer&Company International?
Our technical ability will keep moving forward the more we practice, but we have progressed the student learning potential by a long way; we give a structured education system that gives you choices. Each learning experience moves on to the next creating a complete MethoD that enables you to make and execute the right choice on each technique. We believe over a period of time the work and education will keep moving forward with the industry’s growth.
What has been the highlight of your career together so far?
The last few months have been a roller coaster and very exciting, building the company from the ground up and seeing the response from the hairdressing Industry has been amazing. The team are rising to the occasion and making our dreams come true, our development together has made this my crowning jewel.
Where do you see Palmer&Company International (in the industry) in five years’ time?
We are looking to build our brand over the next 2 years, continuously developing our concepts. After this we want to create a space where we can have a photo studio, workshop area, lecture space, chill out and work space. This would be for us to develop concepts, small classes for guests, photo shoots and personal events. Not an academy but a space for us and our quests.
What advice would you give budding hairdressers?
Be sure to align yourself with like-minded people, work hard to achieve your dreams and practice to be the best you can.
What’s in the pipeline for Palmer&Company International?
This year we align ourselves with some amazing brands, please keep an eye out on our social media for these great collaborations. We are also putting together dates for education in Australia so this could be the perfect chance to learn about our band and the MethoD.
What will be the highlights of your sessions at Hair Expo 2019?
This year we will take a journey through our love for hair, why we do what we do and the MethoD behind each technique. You will see the latest promotion videos, technical live demonstration, Salon and Collection concepts, presentation models and detailed break downs of information.
